Where all things beautiful collide

Well, we are at that crossroads between spring and summer, with grey skies still being the norm here in my neck of the woods, which I would love to see change so I can really get out and play!  What has been my sunshine metaphorically this month has been all the fashion moments.  From the Met Gala, which is the Oscars of fashion, to Cannes, and fresh collections popping up daily for resort 2014.  I always enjoy Vogue, of course, so the June issue featuring Kate Upton (a non-actress) was a treat, as well as Elle Decor for some decorating love!  My ‘It Girls’ for May were Rooney, Nicole, Carey, and Tilda, among many more, while my random obsessions have been gingham and Rothko.  Put that all together and you have??  Well, I think that’s a whole lot of chic inspiration!  What did you love this month?

1.  Met Gala 2013:  ‘Punk:  Chaos to Couture’ was a feast for my fashion eyes, with Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci co-chairing and dressing a baker’s dozen of stars, including Rooney Mara, Florence Welch, artist Marina Abramovic, and musical performer of the evening Debbie Harry.  The night was full of polished looks, with a dash of punk influence.  I loved it as always!  Tisci continues with his honors by being awarded Best International Designer at the upcoming CFDA Awards.

Punk influence aside, Cameron Diaz, Stella Tennant, and Rooney Mara were my top three for the night!

2.  Elle Decor, June 2013:  I can say with full confidence that Elle Decor is my favorite shelter magazine, and the June issue sealed the deal.  When you put projects by my favorite designers Jeffrey Bilhuber, Todd Alexander Romano, Steven Gambrel, and more page after page, it’s almost too good to be true!

3.  Vogue, June 2013:  I will never be one to complain about a beautiful actress gracing the cover of my favorite fashion magazine Vogue, but I have to say it was a nice change of pace to see an old-school blonde bombshell like model Kate Upton star on the cover, photographed by Mario Testino.  Other favorite features were Bruce Weber’s shoot with Dree Hemingway, daughter of Mariel, and great-granddaughter of Ernest.  Roger Vivier’s Bruno Frisoni’s chic getaway in Tangier, featuring pieces by his partner Hervé Van Der Straeten (and one of my favorite artists of all time), was also a treat!

4.  Resort 2014…so far:  Chanel started it off as they usually do for the pre-collections, with Shanghai being the locale for Karl Lagerfeld’s latest Cruise collection.  It’s only just begone, but I’ve been loving the runway shows and look books from designers like Raf Simons for Christian Dior, who showed in Monaco during the Cannes Film Festival, to Oscar de la Renta, Thakoon Addition, and others.  Way more to come!!

5.  The Cannes Film Festival:  There was a lot of fashion to take in at this year’s festival, including Marion Cotillard, who wore mostly Dior, as a face for the house, including the above look that was practically ripped off the resort runway in Monaco!  Other notable style stars were Carey Mulligan, Jessica Chastain, Ziyi Zhang, Audrey Tautou, and my girl Nicole Kidman.

Carey looked so chic in mostly black looks at Cannes, including Calvin Klein Collection, Chloé, Alexander Wang for Balenciaga, and Christian Dior.  The black and white gown by Vionnet (above) was by far the best though!

6.  Nicole:  She’s back!!  Once my muse that never disappointed with her brave fashion choices, proved she’s still a fashion force to be reckoned with at Cannes, wearing multiple Dior Haute Couture looks, L’Wren Scott, Armani, and the Valentino Haute Couture dress Anne Hathaway was supposed to wear to the last Academy Awards.  That was meant to be, because look how ravishing she is in it above!!  She looks like an old Hollywood star below in Dior, and I am so excited to see her as Grace Kelly in the upcoming biopic.

7.  Gingham and Check:  If you read my last post Check Mate! all about the bold pattern, you know that I love it!  It’s an essential for summer, and I highly recommend you stock your closet with it, and perhaps bring it home too.

Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko

8.  Mark Rothko:  Not that the work of Rothko is anything new to me, in fact I’ve loved his bold use of color for as long as I can remember.  As a “creative” I have moments where I’m focused on a particular subject, piece of furniture, shoe, or artist more than normal.  May has been one of those months, and Mark Rothko’s paintings have been inspiring room palettes, and potentially a clothing collection.

9.  CFDA Nominees:  With the CFDA Awards in about a week, I thought I would share my favorite looks from some of the 2012 collections that are being honored.  Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, and the boys of Proenza Schouler are up for Womenswear Designer of the Year, and their spring and fall 2012 collections were definitely among the best!  Proenza’s fall collection was in fact my absolute favorite, and those quilted and embroidered pieces at the end of the show, and deerskin accessories (they’re up for Best Accessory Designer too), are still stuck in my brain!  Congrats to the nominees for Menswear, Accessories, Swarovski nominees, and special honors, including Vera Wang receiving the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award as well!

10.  Tilda and Pre-fall:  With my brain somewhere in between spring 2013 and resort 2014, somewhere in the middle is pre-fall 2013, with the first campaign for Chanel’s Scottish-inspired collection debuting in the June issue of Vogue.  Tilda Swinton was photographed by Karl himself, and she couldn’t have been a more perfect choice!  It makes sense that Chanel would have their campaign show first since the house’s pre-fall collection was the first to be shown earlier this year in a castle in Scotland no less!

I can’t wait for what June has in store!!
