Where all things beautiful collide

It’s August people, and I hate to say it, but summer will most likely be over in a month or so.  I can’t tell personally though by the over 50% humidity and high 80s temps here, but it’s inevitable.  These next few weeks are a perfect time to get ready for the cooler seasons while still enjoying the outdoors.  What a great idea then to create an outdoor space that shelters you from the sun and heat, yet has all the luxuries of the indoor spaces you’ve so carefully decorated!  There are two such spaces by decorator Jeffrey Bilhuber that are everything!  So chic!!  These outdoor rooms are in two different locations, but they share a lot in common other than Bilhuber.  Iron and brass vintage furniture with white cushions, an exclusively neutral palette, natural elements like plants and woven tables and stools, and exotic pieces from Turkey, Morocco, and New Mexico.  These rooms could easily be transported inside, and steal ideas like mirrors, lamps, pillows, and more from the living room.  Make sure to throw down a natural fiber rug, set up a console table as a bar, and add stacks of books, throws and towels, and candlelight, and you should be good to go!  I’ve curated some pieces from our favorite stores to get the look!

Woven tables and stools float about this tiled space by Bilhuber, and make for a versatile spot to entertain and lounge in.  Get the look with rope or carved Moroccan-like tables that are lightweight to move where you need them.

Look for metal furniture that has a classic vibe, sometimes called Campaign-style.  You might find the vintage kind at consignment shops and flea markets, or get it new at Restoration Hardware.  Keep the cushions neutral, and add textural and tone-on-tone patterned pillows (Bilhuber went for animal print).

Layer a rug over concrete or tile and keep it natural for best durability.  West Elm has some that even have metallic threading for some glamour!

Curtains are what will really make it feel like an enclosed space when desired.

Don’t forget lanterns on the floor and hurricanes and votives on any surface that can hold them for maximum candlelight.

I love Turkish towels, and make sure to keep a stack on a table or in a basket if there’s a pool nearby, or use as lightweight throws for chilly summer nights.

This tented space kills me!  Drop an oversized light from the center for the full effect.  The mix of pieces ranging from a Taos drum to low Moroccan chair add interest, and pieces like a folding screen and torchiere lamp bring the indoor feel out.

Bilhuber used a very large woven rope and wood ottoman that he probably had made, but you can get the look by putting two or more rope benches from CB2 together.  Add a tray, books and magazines, towels, and voila!  Layer in more natural texture with a jute rug below.

These pillows are meant for outdoors, but don’t be afraid to bring textiles from inside out, especially if it’s a covered space and only for a month or so.

Bring in those world-traveled touches in a modern way, like with this metal Moroccan-inspired table.

Set up a pretty console with a bar, or style with objects you’d use indoors, even a lamp, and a mirror above.  This particular table is made from concrete and metal, so it could live happily outside year-round, but feel free to haul out a pretty wood or glass-topped table too.

Great trays in different sizes come in handy for entertaining, and are great on ottomans, coffee tables, or for a bar.  Roll out a bar cart too if you have the space!

Finally…eat, drink, and be VERY merry!
