Where all things beautiful collide

Tag Archives: Jeffrey Bilhuber

I was so excited this last week to discover more photos of my favorite interior designer’s most recently published project.  Both Architectural Digest and the builder involved, Schuchart/Dow, shared more beautiful photos of the Seattle home Jeffrey Bilhuber completed a awhile back.  I was already in love with this home, but these new photos sealed that feeling even more.  This home seems particularly appropriate for spring to me too.  I had the privilege of seeing the outside of this home in person while it was being remodeled, but I’d be a happier boy seeing that gorgeous interior!

I’ll be the first to admit, this post would’ve been so perfect at Easter time, but I just got super inspired the other day when Vogue.com shared photos of style icon Gloria Vanderbilt’s beautiful and exuberantly patterned interiors.  The woman has no fear when it comes to color, print, and the mix of it all.  Among that mix is the classically American pattern, gingham.  Gingham on gingham, and even a quilted combination of gingham and checks brighten up her homes, and scream spring.  Looking at Gloria’s rooms, more gingham popped into my head, this time spring fashion from the quintessentially American clothing brand J. Crew, one of my all-time favorites.  Between the two I’m ready to cover all my rooms (and me) with gingham.  It’s both classic and fun!

In the final installment of my series on what’s inspiring me now, revolving around my favorite spring collection, Calvin Klein, the conversation between hard and soft continues.  Leather ruled the runway, but so did silk, sequins, and more.  Yesterday I talked about my favorite black leather furniture pieces, and this post continues that story on how to bring that element also seen on the Calvin Klein runway home, and how to keep the balance of masculine and feminine, hard and soft.  Apparatus continues to play a big role in this dialogue too, with their homes and studio in the mix.  Not that you should copy anyone exactly, but I’ve found some perfect pieces to get the look of their living room.  If you dissect it and also take inspiration from Calvin Klein, you’ll see materials as opposite as each other like silk and concrete, travertine and linen, or wood and fur.  Think of adding any of these elements, and others like leather or snakeskin to your space.  But keep an editing eye, and only add a dollop of each to keep it chic and modern.  And don’t forget my favorite element of all, flowers!

I feel like I’m the opposite of most people when it comes to wearing black.  Most that wear all black have always done so, and have little interest in color.  I’m just now adding black to my wardrobe, since I’m a lover of color, but want more and more.  That’s streaming into my decorating too.  I want matte black walls in my bedroom, black glossy painted floors, and even the whole outside of my house painted black, trim and all.  Until then I guess can manage with a few black furniture pieces, and I particularly like black leather chairs, benches, and more.  From classics by Mies van der Rohe to new designs from Room & Board, there’s something for every room and every home, modern or traditional.  My most wanted piece has to be the embossed leather, shearling, brass, and wood deck chair from BDDW.  Whatever your style is, just add a touch of black to your space!

There are some trends that seem to really explode, and most of those I liked well before everyone else, or I move on after they seem unavoidable in every magazine or on every blog.  One of those current “trends” I will never get sick of are Moroccan rugs, and all the variations, and styles from other destinations like Turkey.  There are so many beautiful options out there, from vintage available through shops and showrooms like Zak + Fox, or new takes on the old from retailers like West Elm, Restoration Hardware, and others.  From tonal to bright, I love them all, and you know what’s better than a Moroccan rug?  Tons of Moroccan rugs layered on each other and scattered about.  They’re a must have!

Continuing on from last week’s post on what’s inspiring me this spring, Calvin Klein Collection s/s 2016 is still at the heart of it in this part II of III.  Last week I focused on the floral looks, and how they translated to the home.  This week it’s all about the chain details that were such an interesting addition, and used in a way I’ve never seen before.  My first thought for how to bring that material home is lighting by Apparatus, specifically their ‘Cloud’ and ‘Link Porcelain’ fixtures.  Other chain details that come to mind are objects by ceramicist Michele Quan, and lights by Natalie Page.  Interior Designer  Jeffrey Bilhuber had custom plaster coated lights on large chain made for the Miami home of former Calvin Klein CEO Barry Schwartz  (nice coincidence), and James Huniford often uses chain as objects in his projects.  Chain is an interesting material that I would recommend adding to your space.  Hang art or bed hangings from the ceiling on brass or bronze chain, or wear chunky gold chains (not like Mr. T, more like Dries van Noten fall ’15) with your favorite outfit!

I don’t know if there’s anything better than French mid-century furniture.  Jean Michel Frank, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier.  Need I say more?  Yes, actually.  Enter the beautiful rope furniture and lighting by duo (a theme this week) Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet.  So much comes to mind when I see their pieces: the French Riviera, spaces of style icons like Hubert de Givenchy, rooms by Jeffrey Bilhuber and Steven Gambrel, other rope pieces, and so much more.  Is it summer yet?
