Where all things beautiful collide

Tag Archives: Oscar de la Renta

Spring has officially sprung as of yesterday, and I couldn’t be more ready for it!  With the fall/winter 2016 fashion shows wrapping up a few weeks ago, a surprising trend has remained in my mind, and is inspiring me now: fall florals.  You all know how much I love flowers, so this trend makes me a happy boy!  When you think of blooms you usually think of spring, so what better time to share these beautiful fashion looks we have to look forward to this autumn.  The trend really exploded in London, and was seen a bit in Milan and Paris, and when I looked back at New York, it was more about plants and greenery instead of flowers.  Ginkgo, fern, and tropicals collided with roses, lilies, and tulips.  An abstract take on flora was even seen on runways like Proenza Schouler (I might be the only one who saw it that way), as well as ditsy prints at Altuzarra.  The best part of all the plant life was all the different ways it was rendered, from embroidered, in lace, metallic, and in a painterly way.  Happy spring!

So this list is a couple of days late from when I normally post it.  Something called New Years distracted me.  This week was a lot about fashion, since I was thinking so much about what to wear on New Year’s Eve, and I was particularly inspired by the jewelry, bags, and embellished boots from the fall ’15, and spring ’16 collections, and paillettes of fashion’s past.  On the home front, I’ve been thinking of fresh looks for the new year, like a bed update, and I am inspired particularly by spaces by the likes of Axel Vervoordt, and Jeffrey Bilhuber.  And I’m still loving all things mid-century.  Pretty flowers and table settings are still a must this year too!

It’s almost a new year!  Time to start thinking about your goals, all the places you want to go to in 2016, and most importantly what to wear New Year’s Eve!  I’ll be keeping it pretty casual this year (I usually at least wear a bow tie), but I have plenty of ideas for what you should wear inspired by the spring 2016 collections.  I’m loving spring pastels now, especially blushy mauve, but wouldn’t mind seeing a bold citron look either.  You can also never go wrong with metallics, like a silver lamé pant, or copper embroidered gown.  For your makeup, get inspired by Prada’s gold lip, or I’m always a fan of a clean neutral face.  A bold red lip is always a classic too though.  Just go for it…it’s the last night of 2015!

I’m sure almost every fashion and style blogger will be talking about Oscar de la Renta today.  The fashion genius, who once worked for Cristóbal Balenciaga and Lanvin, only to go on to be a master of his own namesake, died yesterday at the age of 82.  This news comes just a couple of weeks after the announcement of a new Creative Director of ODLR, Peter Copping of Nina Ricci (a perfect choice I might add).  I could write pages and pages about Mr. de la Renta and his contributions to the fashion world and beyond, but I decided to scour the last decade of his work and share my favorite looks (all gowns save one), and let that speak the volumes I could only try to tell.  Rest in peace Oscar.  You will be missed!

Plaid and all of its variations, like gingham, tartan, glen, tattersall, and check never go out of style, and seem especially relevant for fall.  After seeing the spring 2015 collections last month though, it looks like there really isn’t a season they’re not welcome.  Stella McCartney created light-as-air silky plaid dresses, while Wes Gordon went for a window pane plaid for separates, Oscar de la Renta went bold with an oversized check in baby blue and pink, and I talked about it more in a previous post, but Altuzarra really lead the gingham bandwagon.  For the current autumn season, designers went with more of the traditional multicolored plaids, and a mix of more than one as best illustrated at Creatures of Comfort.  A favorite plaid of mine for the season was at Thakoon, where he made puffer jackets and coats out of a pretty mauve hued pattern for an unexpected combination.  And does it get more French than gingham and a large scaled check?  I think not, and Phoebe Philo was thinking that too at Céline.  Check mate!  However you wear it, and in whatever season, do like I have and get mad for plaid!

I know the Costume Institute’s Met Gala happened yesterday, but you can dress inspired by it everyday!  This year was a celebration of couturier Charles James, who is best known for his spectacular gowns, so we knew from the get go that it was going to be all about pretty and over the top ball gowns this year.  Full length skirts, opera gloves, and brilliant baubles were also called for, and for the men?  White tie!  With what I know of Mr. James, I had instantly in mind some of today’s best designers that would really shine in the spirit of Charles James.  The man of the night, before I even saw how many ladies were wearing his garments, was surely going to be Mr. Oscar de la Renta.  Sarah Jessica Parker even wore a custom gown emblazoned with the designers name on the back, with some controversy.  I liked it!  Zac Posen was also all over the red carpet, with his incredibly ladylike looks.  I’ll share my official favorite looks from the evening tomorrow on my Tumblr, but for now, here are some looks I would’ve loved to see, and some that just inspire me!

Dressing for holidays isn’t what it used to be.  Yes, I totally encourage dressing up, but you need not put on your fanciest floor length frock, opera gloves, and pearls.  This Easter I’m thinking a jordan almond hued bomber jacket, sorbet striped tweed blazer, or cherry blossom embellished dress is more appropriate.  There’s plenty to love from the spring runways to wear for spring’s main events, Easter and Passover, that are still modern and that can be worn well into summer.  I didn’t leave the guys out either.  I would love to wear that Paul Smith sweater with some dark jeans rolled up and worn with some Keds.  What will you be wearing?
