Where all things beautiful collide

Tag Archives: West Elm

Happy Earth Day!  In honor of this day to remember the beauty of this planet we share, and more importantly how to keep it beautiful, I just wanted to share some plantspiration.  My fave florist Putnam & Putnam collaborated with West Elm earlier in the season for a couple of their catalogs, putting Putnam’s expertise in all things flowers and plants to good use, sharing their take on the terrarium.  West Elm is a longtime lover of the terrarium, as seen in various posts on their blog Front + Main.  They’re really so simple to make, and can be as simple as a single lady slipper orchid surrounded by moss, or a cactus planted in layers of varying shades of sand.  Spend your earth day creating terrariums for yourself, or better yet, spread the joy and make some for all your friends and family to keep the earth green and beautiful!

In the final installment of my series on what’s inspiring me now, revolving around my favorite spring collection, Calvin Klein, the conversation between hard and soft continues.  Leather ruled the runway, but so did silk, sequins, and more.  Yesterday I talked about my favorite black leather furniture pieces, and this post continues that story on how to bring that element also seen on the Calvin Klein runway home, and how to keep the balance of masculine and feminine, hard and soft.  Apparatus continues to play a big role in this dialogue too, with their homes and studio in the mix.  Not that you should copy anyone exactly, but I’ve found some perfect pieces to get the look of their living room.  If you dissect it and also take inspiration from Calvin Klein, you’ll see materials as opposite as each other like silk and concrete, travertine and linen, or wood and fur.  Think of adding any of these elements, and others like leather or snakeskin to your space.  But keep an editing eye, and only add a dollop of each to keep it chic and modern.  And don’t forget my favorite element of all, flowers!

I feel like I’m the opposite of most people when it comes to wearing black.  Most that wear all black have always done so, and have little interest in color.  I’m just now adding black to my wardrobe, since I’m a lover of color, but want more and more.  That’s streaming into my decorating too.  I want matte black walls in my bedroom, black glossy painted floors, and even the whole outside of my house painted black, trim and all.  Until then I guess can manage with a few black furniture pieces, and I particularly like black leather chairs, benches, and more.  From classics by Mies van der Rohe to new designs from Room & Board, there’s something for every room and every home, modern or traditional.  My most wanted piece has to be the embossed leather, shearling, brass, and wood deck chair from BDDW.  Whatever your style is, just add a touch of black to your space!

In keeping with yesterday’s post and my love of all things Morocco, today I’m sharing my 5 favorite things to add to your home as the season warms up…well four for the home, and one for you.  It’s as simple as adding tons of candlelight, specifically big lanterns on the floor and hanging from the ceiling, or take it further with beautiful Moroccan rugs (Turkish and some others can count) scattered about, Moroccan-inspired furniture, or do as Disc Interiors does, and cover your kitchen back splash or bathroom walls with wavy Moroccan tile.  I love the bold colorful tile more traditional of Morocco, but I’m really loving solid black and cream tiles for a more modern take.  And for you?  Well, the Babouche slipper in various forms is the “it” shoe for spring, and they look pretty comfy.  It doesn’t take much, but a little (or a lot) Moroccan goods, or inspired by, can go a long way.

There are some trends that seem to really explode, and most of those I liked well before everyone else, or I move on after they seem unavoidable in every magazine or on every blog.  One of those current “trends” I will never get sick of are Moroccan rugs, and all the variations, and styles from other destinations like Turkey.  There are so many beautiful options out there, from vintage available through shops and showrooms like Zak + Fox, or new takes on the old from retailers like West Elm, Restoration Hardware, and others.  From tonal to bright, I love them all, and you know what’s better than a Moroccan rug?  Tons of Moroccan rugs layered on each other and scattered about.  They’re a must have!

Spring is in full swing, and if you’re feeling like I am, it’s time to redecorate, or at least freshen up the place a bit.  One of my always go-tos is West Elm.  I love their easy mix of pieces that don’t feel like they necessarily came from one shop.  Their range includes industrial, rustic, modern, and mid-century furniture and home furnishings.  I’ve gone through their newest items and have chosen my favorites, with a few not so new pieces mixed in.  I particularly love the large collection in collaboration with Roar + Rabbit, and new pieces for indoors and out by John Vogel.  It’s funny looking at all my selections together, because I’d totally put them all in the same space.  I’m also so excited, because I’ve been without a West Elm in my neck of the woods for over a year, but that all changes this summer!  I’ll hopefully be picking up some of these pieces very soon.

Although fall is by far my favorite season for fashion, and design in general, I have been so inspired for this spring!  A big part of that inspiration has been on my mind since last September when I first saw my favorite collection at New York fashion week, Calvin Klein Collection.  Creative Director Francisco Costa sent models down the runway in looks that combined elements of hard and soft.  Silk, leather, sequins, chain details, skater shoes, and my favorite part of all, stunning surrealist floral prints.  I’ve literally been thinking of these looks for six months, and I’ve been imagining how perfect that inspiration flows into the home.  Enter the ever-inspiring floral creations of Putnam & Putnam, a dose of Apparatus studio, and floral Belgian linen from one of my favorite stores, West Elm.  I’ll let the images speak more for themselves, but I’ve been so inspired by the spring Calvin Klein collection that there are more parts to this series.  Stay tuned!
